Members of the British government are singing a new tune about cannabis. Recognizing the many positive elements of legalization, MPs are urging their government to consider moving Britain’s drug policy towards cannabis legalization. These politicians cite the vast tax revenues to be earned, the decrease in drug offenders serving time in jail and the regulation of a market that is currently underground.
Many Benefits from British Legalization
Market research shows Britain has a potential £6Bn market for legal cannabis. Sales at that number would create between £750 million and £1.06Bn in tax revenue. The 1,363 prisoners in jail for cannabis-related offenses would decrease and potentially save the British people £50 million per year.
Former deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, is encouraging UK leadership to look at the global trend towards legalization, and to join Portual, Canada, the US, Germany and others in moving towards an end of prohibition.
